Now that blogspot allows you to embed video in your blogs, you are fortunate enough to be able to see this gentleman (the achchari, or goldsmith/professional ear piercer) stab big(ger) holes in my ears with metal spikes. The windy noise is the ceiling fan. I ask him if he needs to clean the stuff first and if it is clean, then I ask him if he is going to pierce through the earhole I already have, or if he is going to make a new hole. He pierced through the already existing hole to make room for the enormous gauge they use here for earrings. I've had tattoos and I have had my nose pierced three times in the same place, twice "primitively" with the preferred Indian metal spike method, and NONE of those things felt quite like this. CURIOUS.
Hi, My name is Ram. I am from Madurai. I wish I learned English a long time ago, so I would have been able to interact with the foreigners that visit Madurai.
I accidentally ran into you blog, and I was really amazed to read about my city through your view. I have to strongly agree with the most of the things you wrote.
Especially about all about the "white" skin stuff, you wrote. I was born and brought up in Madurai. Since I was a kid, I was always amazed and looked upto the white skin, (white people) because thats what I was taught. White is good, dark is bad.
I moved to Canada 2.5 years ago, and I was surprised about how things are. You know how it is in Madurai right? I have never been on a plane before, and the western culture was way way new to me, I was literally shocked to see a lot of things that I thought I knew, were wrong. I did not fit in. I couldn't. But, I learned that it was all in my head.
But later on, I started get along, learned the language better, and started to see everybody as equal. I was really attracted to "white girls" for some reasons, although I find all the other races attractive, I wonder if this has something to do with the white skin worshiping since I was a child.
I work as a visual effects artist in Toronto now, working for Hollywood movies which once was my dream to work with white people, now I feel stupid to think that I had that kind of mentality. lol call me crazy, but you exactly know what I am talking about.
OMG I was fascinated and very happy to see that you speak believable Tamil. It was almost perfect. How did you do that? It is so cool. I always looked for some that can speak Tamil without rehearsing in their head.
I wanted to stay in touch and please write more blogs. If you will be going back to Madurai, my parents still live there, and I totally know about white people are not allowed inside the shrine in Meenakshi temple, thats too bad. I think they do it for security reasons, but again it doesn't' make any sense. However, my dad has so much of pull in all the temples. If you are planning on going back to Madurai, do not hesitate to let me know, I would be glad to help.
I would love to be in touch with you on facebook, if you do not mind.

If you have more videos that you recorded while you were in Madurai, please upload them. They're very interesting.
